Copper Center George Ashby
1898 Gold Rush Museum
In the summer of 1898, several thousand men headed from Valdez over two glaciers and into the Copper Valley.
It was a terrible trip for most of them. First, they had to survive the glaciers, over which they dragged thousands of pounds of gear and food they thought they would need.
Then they discovered they had to make boats out of spruce, by hand, to float their gear down the raging Klutina River. Needless to say, it was an arduous journey.
To top it off, the Copper Valley had no gold.
Most returned back to Valdez that October, leaving behind many of the artifacts you’ll find in this one-of-a kind museum. It is well worth the stop.
Mile 100 Richardson Hwy in downtown Copper Center beside the beautiful Klutina River. Turn just past the bridge when heading south.
